Department of Philosophy, Sociology and Religious Studies

Department of Philosophy, Sociology and Religious Studies was established in 1966. In September 1995 the Department of Philosophy transferred to the structure of the newly established Faculty of Philosophy. Since 27 October 2011 the department was renamed as the Department of Philosophy and Sociology. Until 2002 Department was headed by candidate of philosophical sciences Mikhailo Golianych. Since 2002 Department is headed by doctor of sciences in philosophy, professor Victoria Larionova. Since 2017 Department is headed by PhD, Associate Pprofessor Maksym Doichyk.

The Department of Philosophy, Sociology and Religious Studies offers a wide range of courses (philosophy, sociology, ethics, logic, aesthetics and others) for the students of different faculties. The Department also offers a program in philosophy for postgraduates of all specialties.

The research activities of the Department cover the following main areas: ethics, history of philosophy, gender studies. These themes are covered in lectures of Philosophy study programme. Postgraduate studies are offered for the following specialties: “History of Philosophy” (09.00.05) and “Ethics” (09.00.07). Scientists of the Department are participating in various research projects, for example within the «Centre for gender studies» (director – Galina Dychkovska).

For many years, the Department’s researchers have published textbooks, monographs and scientific articles. Since 2000 is issued «The Precarpathian University Journal. Philosophy and psychology».

Series of scientific conferences were organized by the Department of Philosophy and Sociology:

–      «Actual problems of transformation of moral values of modern Ukrainian society» (2010);

–      «Ukrainian philosophical thought in the context of European philosophy» (2011);

–      «Issues of morality: Theory and Practice» (2014);

–      «Man as an object of philosophical reflection» (2014);

–      «Ukrainian philosophical thought in the context of European philosophy: history and modernity» (2015).

The Department collaborates with colleagues from the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University, Drohobych Ivan Franko State Pedagogical University, H.S. Skovoroda Institute of Philosophy NAS of Ukraine, Sociological Association of Ukraine.
